Excerpt from A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch, Flemish and French Painters, Vol. 7: In Which Is Included a Short Biographical Notice of the Artists, With a Copious Description of Their Principal Pictures In reference to the sizes given, some little allowance must be made for triżing errors, most of the pictures having been measured from the front of the frames; and it not infrequently happens that more of the picture is hid than is necessary. The measures given of pictures in foreign galleries are taken from the catalogues of such collections, and such measures differ from our own in the following ratio -a French foot is {3; of an inch longer than an English one, a Dutch foot is equal to 12% English, a Vienna to and a Leipsic, or Saxon, is only 11% English.
