The book shares Gary Boothroyd's 27 years of teaching PE at Holte Comprehensive School in inner city Birmingham. From the boy who did not want to go swimming because his family were on a private fast and he wasn't allowed to swallow water, to another who wrote his own note: "Mumbasser has a leg." Or when his school held the district cross-country championships in thick fog even though the only grass in the area was in the middle of a dual carriageway. But it was not all fun and games. Gary writes in the book how he had to cradle a dying child, stabbed to death outside the school gates by another pupil and deal with racist thugs. Plus, he started on the road to stardom Mark Walters, a footballer who went on to find fame with England, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Rangers. A book that should be read by all would-be teachers as well as those who will chuckle at the memories all teachers share.
