The book is a historical investigation of the problem of immortality and eschatology in Greek philosophy from the Presocratics to the early Hellenistic period. It investigates psychological views of Greek philosophers and their views on the prospects of infinite human existence after death. The view espoused in the book is that the problem of eschatology was, generally, of secondary importance for Greek philosophers. It was an important problem at the dawn of Greek philosophy when a new anthropology was established by three forces: the mystery religion, the Orphics, and the Pythagoreans. A long period of disinterest in eschatology followed (with the possible exception of Empedocles), and the importance of psychology was again recognized by Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and the problem of eschatology was investigated anew by Socrates and the Academy. Dieses Buch ist eine historische Studie über das Problem der Unsterblichkeit und Eschatologie in der griechischen Philosophie von den Vorsokratikern bis zur frühen hellenistischen Zeit. Der Autor untersucht die Ansichten der griechischen Philosophen über die Seele und ihre Standpunkte zur Aussicht auf ewige menschliche Existenz nach dem Tod. In dem vorliegenden Buch wird die Meinung vertreten, dass das Problem der Eschatologie für die griechischen Philosophen in der Regel nur von sekundärem Interesse war. In der Frühzeit der griechischen Philosophie war es ein bedeutendes Problem, als von drei verschiedenen Kräften eine neue Anthropologie begründet wurde: dem Mysterienkult, den Orphikern und den Pythagoreern. Darauf folgte jedoch eine lange Zeit der Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber der Eschatologie (eine mögliche Ausnahme bildet hier nur Empedokles). Die hohe Bedeutung der Seelenkunde wurde erst wieder von Sokrates, Platon und Aristoteles anerkannt, und Sokrates und die Akademie befassten sich erneut mit dem Problem der Eschatologie.
