To miasto bardzo nietypowe, z charakterystycznymi cechami pogranicza, podlegajace wplywom zachodnim i wschodnim, miejsce spotkan wielu kultur, nacji i wyznan. Wiekszosc bialostotczan byla pochodzenia zydowskiego, jednak od przelomu wiekow odradzala sie polskosc, dobrze prosperowali tutejsi Niemcy, przybywalo mniejszosci wschodnioslowianskich. To mieszanie sie wzorcow kulturowych owocowalo powstawaniem wartosci oryginalnych i niepowtarzalnego klimatu. The book presents almost 100 postcards of Bialystok from before 1915. It was a time of rapid development of this town, called "the Manchester of the North", a large textile industry center. This was an unusual town, with characteristic features of a borderland, subject to influence of the West and the East, a meeting point of many cultures, nations and religions. Most inhabitants of Bialystok were Jewish, but since the turn of the century the Polish identity started to revive and local Germans prospered, Slavic minorities from the East grew in numbers. This mixture of cultural patterns resulted in unmistakable original values and unique climate.
