The village of Cheddleton in Staffordshire has a long and fascinating history. One of the most well-known buildings in the village is St Edward's Hospital, once known as Cheddleton County Mental Asylum, which opened in 1899. The asylum was atypical at the time, as it was a self-contained and self-sufficient village in its own right, with farms and other works buildings. The village today has a population of around 5,000 residents and is served by a number of shops and a post office. Cheddleton is also served by the larger town of Leek, which is approximately 3 miles to the north. Also covered in this title are a number of surrounding villages and communities.
