Die Studie analysiert die Herrschaftsstrukturen und Machtstrukturen der domitianischen Zeit anhand ausgewählter Aspekte und ordnet sie in den Kontext der Prinzipatsentstehung ein. Dazu wird Domitians Regierungsstil mit dem seiner Vorgänger und Nachfolger verglichen. Auf Einleitung, Quellenlage und Forschungsgeschichte folgen drei Hauptkapitel. Erstens geht es darum, wie Domitian seine Herrschaft legitimierte und repräsentierte, wobei sich seine traditionelle Haltung zeigt und Augustus und Vespasian als besondere Vorbilder dienten. Militärischen Siegen, rechtlicher Absicherung der Macht und dynastischer Familienherrschaft kam besondere Bedeutung zu, während religiöse Neuerungen gering wogen. Zweitens wird die Regierungstätigkeit untersucht mit dem Ergebnis, daß Domitians Politik klare Linien aufwies, auf bewährten Vorbildern beruhte und das Reich umsichtig regiert wurde. Drittens wird das Verhältnis Domitians zum Senat betrachtet. Es zeigt sich, daß das Bild des "grausamen Tyrannen" unhaltbar ist und Domitian Konflikte mit dem Senat vermied. Eine abschließende Bewertung ergibt, daß die Herrschaft Domitians keinen Wendepunkt darstellt, sondern in vorgezeichneten Bahnen verlief. This study analyses the structures of governance and power during the reign of Domitian on the basis of selected aspects and integrates it into the context of the formation of the principate. To this end, Domitian's style of administration is compared to the one of his predecessors and successors. Introduction, source criticism, and history of research are followed by three main chapters. Firstly, the author investigates how Domitian legitimised and represented his reign to the result that he had rather traditional attitudes and used Augustus and Vespasian as particular models. Special importance was assigned to military victories, the legitimation of power, and dynastical family rule, while religious reforms were of minor importance. Secondly, the governmental performance is analysed which reveals that Domitian's policy possessed a clear line, was based on well-proven models and that the Empire was prudently governed. Thirdly, Domitian's relationship to the senate is considered. It becomes clear that the image of a "cruel tyrant" is unsustainable and that Domitian avoided conflicts with the senate. A final appraisal shows that the reign of Domitian was no watershed, but proceeded in predetermined paths.
