In the 1970's Damien Enright and his friends moved to Ibiza and Formentera, islands in the Mediterranean Sea now known for drug-fuelled rave parties, to escape the rat-race and have the freedom to get high whenever they wanted. Numerous adventures ensued in the Balearics. Dope in the Age of Innocence tells of Enright's two wives, both of whom he brought to the islands, and the children he had with them. The book also describes the schemes Enright used to finance his families' stays on the islands, from innocent tutoring, to forging checks, and eventually a disastrous trip to Turkey to source marijuana in bulk. He was stopped by customs on the border of Spain, who were amazed to discover a record-breaking haul of marijuana. Enright then details the time he spent in hiding before he was able to escape.
