Historically, Hampshire has always played a significant part in the country's defence, boasting many forts across its coastline. The county's response during the Second World War proved no exception, with boats and troops departing from the county and journeying into enemy territory. Life on the home front during this period was exceptionally difficult. Heavy bombing of the major coastal cities in the county, Portsmouth and Southampton, destroyed much of their architectural heritage and caused significant loss of life. The strength and courage of Hampshire's residents and its men sent overseas to fight is explored in this fascinating collection of old photographs. Author John Leete reveals the dramatic changes to the county during this period, through poignant images and captions.
