Brekekekex, ko-ax, ko-ax! The croaking of the chorus of Frogs accompanying the katabasis of Dionysus, who travelled to Hades to find a talented tragic poet, is unquestionably Aristophanes’ best-known verse: the animals in his plays deserved to be the focus of a study aimed at revealing the ways in which they define the comic poet’s work to the point of symbolising it.
