An angel returns from Eden, his wings singed by the sheer beauty of Adam and Eve's world, his spirit longing for the pleasures of their flesh. Jealousy and discontent among the angels to a rebellion led by Lucifer against the Creator. Banned on its second night in 1654, Lucifer was attacked by Calvinist authorities for allegedly treating 'God's profundities in a carnal manner. However the text was published at once and enjoyed an immense success. It is regarded by some as a major influence on Milton's Paradise Lost. Lucifer was first performed in Noel Clark's stylish rhyming translation at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London in June 1988.
