The historian Khvandmir (d. 15345) came from an educated family of Herat. As a young man he received encouragement and patronage from the cultivated Amirand administrator, 'Alishir Nava'i, famous also as the greatest of Cagatay poets. The Makarim al-Akhlaq, is a panegyric biography, was incomplete at Nava'i's sudden death in 1501 and was dedicated to the Timurid King, Sultan Husain Mirza. It contains sections on its subject's life, literary and charitable works, noble qualities etc. Written in the florid style favoured by Khvandmir, it contains much interesting information on the social life of the period. The edition reproduces the unique 16th-century MS in the British Library and contains the Persian text, with introduction and indices.
