This book offers the first survey of the Left in New Zealand, exploring the richness of that tradition and its significance for New Zealand's political culture. It is a collection of essays that spans the twentieth century, examining a range of ideals, political organizations and social action adopted by the Left, as well as New Zealand's response to them. An introduction surveys left-wing thought and practice in New Zealand. Themes or questions that trace through the essays are: how the Left has been seen; its history; gender and ethnicity issues in the Left; changing nature and diversity of the Left; and the distinctive character of the New Zealand Left.
