Book synopsis

Excerpt from An Outline History of England The ballad literature of England and Scotland might be further drawn upon with profit. Should this work serve its chief purpose, by inspiring its readers with a desire to know more of English history, a few suggestions may be helpful. This book would best be followed by Gardiner's "Student's History of England," or, if one cares for more of the social life and less of drum and trumpet, by Green's "Short History of the English People." To cover the ground more thoroughly read Green's "Making of England," Freeman's "Norman Conquest," Froude's "History of [Tudor] England," Gardiner's still incomplete "History of England, 1603-1660," Macaulay's "History of England from the Accession of James II.," Lecky's "History of England in the Eighteenth Century," Stanhope's "History of England, 1701-83," Martineau's "History of England, 1800-1854," Walpole's "History of England from 1815," McCarthy's "History of Our Own Times." It should be remembered that most of these historians saw through Protestant spectacles. The Roman Catholic authority is Lingard, whose history is of great value. Much of the early course of English history, especially during the period when England was a continental power, should be read atlas in hand. The best historical atlas for the purpose is Gardiner's. In conclusion let me frankly acknowledge beforehand my debt to J. R. Green, whose writings have renewed the popularity of English history, and to H. D. Traill, whose valuable volumes on "Social England" have contributed much to the notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
