Book synopsis

Theorists and philosophers have often used metaphor from natural phenomena to explain political events; from Marx and Engels' description of solids melting into air under capitalism, to the conceptualization of geopolitics as examining politics of the earth. Michael Marder describes the literal and metaphorical properties of fire - as a source of heat and light - in an exploration of the negative and positive elements of today's international politics. Acknowledging that fire has always been a relevant political metaphor in terms of war and revolution, Marder explores past uses of the concept of 'pyropolitics'. He then goes on to show how this symbolism is increasingly relevant to understanding global political events today and in the future. Using phenomenological approaches alongside contemporary political theory, literature, and in-depth case study analyses, the text develops a new vocabulary and a highly original interdisciplinary theoretical framework that makes sense of the rapid changes occurring throughout twenty-first century global politics.
