Robert Frank's seminal photography book, The Americans, was what inspired Lam to start a 10-year project in 2006 to document the story of Singapore. That book portrayed various segments of society in America in the 1950s. Likewise Lam's photo documentary was during an extremely important period when Singapore entered a new phase of economic development that saw new physical infrastructure being built, many events and activities being introduced and new migrants settling on this island.
