During a great land rush early in the nineteenth century, the land we now call central Indiana went, in a very short time, from being unknown wilderness, to a new frontier, to a land people passed through going farther west. The history of that land and the people who tamed it is a story repeated all across the Old Northwest. Told through the eyes of the author's ancestors, this is a story of settlements and of a hearty people who created and transformed those settlements from the wilds they found there.
