Excerpt from A System of Midwifery, Theoretical and Practical: Illustrated With Copper-Plates The multiplicity of publications on Midwifery might seem to render the present one unnecessary; but having, for a considerable time, applied myself to the study of, and likewise practised and taught this branch for more than ten years, at the desire of several gentlemen who had attended me this Treatise was begun, on the same plan that I had endeavoured to explain it to them in my lectures. In order to illustrate it, I have added several copper-plates, selected, in part, from such authors whose works, if bought in their best and original form, would prove very expensive to the student, while others are taken from original drawings and preparations.
