Merit, it is said, often descends to the grave unknown, but that it sometimes bursts forth from obscurity, is sufficiently proved by our present navigator, whose nautical skill and enterprising spirit were his only introductions to the world. James Cook was born at Marston, in Cleveland, a village near Great Ayton, Yorkshire, October 27, 1728. He was of humble parentage, and when about two years old, his father took him, and the rest of his family, to Great Ayton, where the elder Mr. Cook was appointed to superintend a considerable farm; in which employment he was assisted by his son, during his tender years. At the age of 13, he was placed under the tuition of Mr. Pullen, a school-master at Ayton, who taught him arithmetic and book-keeping.
