1817 fuhr Karl Drais, studierter Forstlehrer und damals noch Freiherr, auf einem bisher nie gesehenen Fuhrwerk aus Mannheim hinaus. Im Vorjahr hatte es einen totalen Ernteausfall gegeben - mit Hungersnot, Futtermangel und Pferdesterben. Was man damals nicht wusste: Der Vulkanausbruch des Tambora 1815 östlich von Bali hatte den Globus mit einer Aerosolschicht użberzogen, die durch Abkużhlung eine derartige Klimakatastrophe verursacht hatte. Drais wollte mit seiner Laufmaschine, dem Urfahrrad auf zwei Rädern, die bedrohten Reitpferde ersetzen. Zum 200jährigen Jubiläum des Fahrrads präsentiert der Drais-Biograph Hans-Erhard Lessing seine verblużffenden Erkenntnisse użber die erstaunliche Karriere dieser Mobilitätsidee im ganzen Abendland, bevor Fahrverbote und die aufkommende Eisenbahn dem Fortschritt ein Ende setzten.
