Wien 1918/1919: Der einstige Offizier Georg Vittorin kann die Demütigungen nicht vergessen, die er als Kriegsgefangener von dem russischen Lagerkommandanten Seljukow erdulden musste, und beschließt, als Rächer zurückzukehren. Eine dramatische Verfolgungsjagd beginnt, die ihn durch die Sowjetunion, nach Konstantinopel, Rom, Mailand, Paris und weiter treibt, bis es schließlich in Wien zu dem erhofften "Duell ohne Zeugen" kommt. Diese Geschichte eines Kriegsheimkehrers erschien zuerst im Jahr 1928 als Fortsetzungsroman in der "Berliner Illustrierten Zeitung" und gehörte am Ende der Weimarer Republik zu den bekanntesten Büchern seiner Zeit.
