Excerpt from Edinburgh Records, the Burgh Accounts, Vol. 1: I. Bailies' Accounts, 1544-1566; II. Town Treasurers' Accounts, 1552-1567 The Town Council of Edinburgh, having taken into considera tion the question of publishing extracts from their Records not included in the series above referred to, resolved to publish in full these two volumes of Accounts, and requested Mr Adam to under take the work for them. From his position as City Chamberlain and Accountant, and his service in the Chamberlain's Department for upwards of fifty years, as well as by personal tastes and acquire ments, Mr Adam was exceptionally well qualified for the work. He readily complied with the request, and the result is seen in the present volume, which contains the Bailies' and Town Treasurers' Accounts, and in the second or companion volume, which contains the Dean of Guild Accounts. F ac similes of portions of the original ms. Are given, from which some idea can be formed of the laborious nature of the undertaking. The work of transcribing these Accounts was all done by Mr Adam, or by his daughter, Miss Adam, under his supervision, and he personally collated the transcribed ms. With the original, as well as with the proof sheets, and saw the work through the press. In the two volumes as now presented, the arrangement of the original collection has been preserved.
