Hattie Marshall, a 13-year-old girl from Texas, joins family friends on a holiday to New Orleans and Grand Isle in the Gulf of Mexico. It is the autumn of 1893, and with her good friend Eric, she enjoys new sights and adventures. She rides on a steamboat, thrills at the sights of porpoises, and even searches for pirates' treasure on a barrier island. While she and Eric dig for the pirates' gold, they find themselves caught up in the biggest adventure of all, as a monster Gulf storm -- the infamous and deadly Hurricane of 1893 -- roars across the Louisiana coastline. Together the youngsters battle the fierce winds and waves, help to rescue an imperiled Acadian family, and receive their first glimpse of the responsibilities of adulthood.
