This is a much-anticipated sociological analysis of gender components in contemporary American Jewish life based on the most recent population data. Based on the 2000/2001 National Jewish Population Survey, in "Gender Equality and American Jews" Harriet and Moshe Hartman offer an important 'sequel' to their "Gender Equality and American Jews" (1996). Building on their critical work in that previous volume, and drawing on relevant sociological work on gender, religion, and secular achievement, this new book brings the Hartmans' analysis of gendered patterns in contemporary Jewish life right up-to the present moment. The first part of this book examines the distinctiveness of American Jews including educational attainment, familistic behavior, labor force patterns, and occupational attainment. The second investigates the various meanings of 'Jewishness.' The authors also examine the differences between intermarried Jews and intra-married Jews to address the question of whether intermarriage results in 'less Jewish' patterns of family and secular behavior.
