This book is a chronicle of the 1st International Workshop in which clinical scientists interested in autoimmunity came together with basic scientists in molecular and cellular biology interested in intracellular structure and function. They provide insight into the breadth and scope of certain reagents available from clinicians and how these can be gainfully used in basic biological research. Spontaneously occurring autoantibodies in lupus and other autoimmune diseases are powerful reagents which have been used to isolate intracellular molecules present in small amounts but difficult to isolate and characterize by usual biochemical procedures. These autoantibodies have been instrumental in many cases in elucidating the structure and function of important intracellular particles. These particles include those involved in splicing, transcription, translation and even DNA replication. From knowledge of the structure and function of the antigens, clinical scientists can increase our understanding of autoimmune mechanisms.
